Ninety-six senior golfers from six local participating clubs contested this year’s Greene King Senior Pairs Trophy at the Crowne Plaza Colchester Five Lakes Golf Club. This prestigious event, again benefitting from the very generous and supportive sponsorship of Greene King Brewery of Bury St Edmunds, brought together teams from Braintree, Burnham on Crouch, Colchester, Frinton, Maldon and Five Lakes who each fielded 8 pairs of senior players in a four-ball better ball Stableford format, challenging for the coveted Greene King Trophy. The winner is the Club that accumulates the highest number of points from its team members.

In warm overcast conditions, but with a challenging breeze, high scoring was not guaranteed but a dozen pairs managed to rack up scores of 40 points and better with Burnham’s Stephen Hull and John Johnson returning the day’s best pair score of 46 points.

Last year’s winners, Colchester, set an early target with three pairs scoring at least 40 points with Jim Wilkinson and late replacement Bob Potter returning 42 points, to make a notable contribution to their team’s total of 304 points. This total however was not enough for Colchester to retain the Trophy, being surpassed at a late stage by the winning host club, Five Lakes, with a total of 311 points. Significant contributions were made by five pairs with plus 40-point better ball scores for the home team with the pairs of Tony Tyler and Danny Murtagh and Stuart Kempster and David Parkins being particularly impressive with returns of 44 and 43 points respectively.

At the presentation meal after the competition, provided by the Crowne Plaza Resort, Five Lakes Seniors Captain Mick Phillis welcomed all players and helpers and congratulated and presented prizes to the winners. He acknowledged the efforts of the Five Lakes management and ground staff in presenting the facilities to a high standard and thanked Messrs Greene King for its generous and continued support for this important local golfing event.

The main results were:
